Rubén Darío Insúa Carballo, born in Buenos Aires, Argentina on April 17, 1961, is a former professional football player and manager who primarily played as a midfielder.
Insúa began his playing career at San Lorenzo in 1978 before moving to Spanish side UD Las Palmas in 1986, later returning to Argentina to play for Estudiantes de La Plata and Independiente, where he won the 1988-89 Primera División championship.
During his playing career abroad, he won the Ecuadorian championship and finished as the top scorer with seventeen goals playing for Barcelona Sporting Club in 1991, subsequently playing for Deportivo Cali and concluding his professional playing career after a stint with Quilmes in 1996-97.
He transitioned to management in 1997 with Barcelona Sporting Club, winning the Ecuadorian championship that same year and reaching the Copa Libertadores final in 1998 before returning to Argentina to manage Ferro Carril Oeste briefly.
In July 2002, Insúa assumed his first managerial stint at San Lorenzo, leading the club to conquer the inaugural Copa Sudamericana in 2002 after defeating Atlético Nacional in the final.
Following his initial success at San Lorenzo, he managed several international clubs across South America, including Barcelona Sporting Club, Alianza Lima, Jorge Wilstermann, Talleres, Deportivo Quito—winning the 2009 Ecuadorian championship—and El Nacional.
His later managerial assignments included stints with Club Bolívar, Liga de Portoviejo—securing promotion to the top tier—and Deportivo Binacional, before returning to San Lorenzo in May 2022 to guide the team back to international competition.
In his second spell at San Lorenzo, he achieved a strong third-place finish in the 2023 Torneo de la Liga Profesional and secured qualification for the Copa Libertadores before concluding his tenure in April 2024.
He was appointed manager of Barracas Central in September 2024, historicly leading the club to qualification for the Copa Sudamericana before departing by mutual agreement in June 2026.
In September 2026, Insúa returned to San Lorenzo for his third managerial cycle at the club.
